      <image:title>Mai - Research Associate</image:title>
<image:caption>Mai joined as a Research Associate after a successful tenure in the lab of Gordon Shore (McGill). Mai has researched mitochondria throughout her career, from transcriptional pathways to protein import, cell death, cancer, and the development of therapeutics. In Dr. McBride's laboratory, her goal is to uncover the signaling pathways that couple mitochondrial sumo ligase MAPL to cellular responses. She recently discovered some key components that potentially link lysosomal damage response to mitochondrial dysfunction. Mai's strength is her commitment to teamwork. She readily embraces expertise from new lab members and enjoys the interaction at all levels Expertise: mai.nguyen@mcgill.ca</image:caption>

<image:caption>Aurèle joined us after a stellar Ph.D in the lab of Jennifer Estall at the IRCM where he worked on the pathogenesis of diabetes, focusing on the role of transcriptional coactivators in liver. A native of France, Aurèle gained a profound knowledge of global metabolism during his training. He is currently working to understand how the peroxisome contribute to metabolic homeostasis at both the cellular and organismal level. Often overlooked, peroxisome dynamics, biogenesis and function have captured Aurèle’s imagination and he wants to unlock new paradigm in our understanding of peroxisomes by combining his previous expertise with the tricks of the McBride lab. <image:caption>Coming to us from the exciting metropolis of Mumbai, Dhaval completed his Ph.D. in the lab of Stephen Witt at Louisiana State University in Shreveport where he utilized yeast models to uncover the function of sorting nexins in the trafficking of iron transporters. He also explored yeast as a model to examine the role of alpha-synuclein in endosomal trafficking pathways. He joined us to continue our work on the mechanisms of iron delivery to mitochondria, in a project initiated by Maxime Jacoupy. His interest in the role of Parkinson’s related proteins in these pathways remains keen and we look forward to the many new truths he will uncover. <image:title>Andres - Post-Doctoral Fellow</image:title>
<image:caption>Native from Montevideo Uruguay, I completed my PhD studies in the lab of Prof. Atan Gross, where I studied the role of the mitochondrial protein MTCH2 in regulating the morphology and dynamic behavior of this organelle. During my period in the Weizmann Institute, I specialized in microscopy, image analysis and biochemistry, navigating through the fields of mitochondrial dynamics, but also areas such as apoptosis, mitochondrial DNA homeostasis, inter-organelle contact sites, mitochondrial function as well as metabolism and lipids homeostasis. Now in Heidi’s lab my focus will be to study one of the most, if not the most important biological function for which mitochondria are critical and essential for. This important task that only mitochondria can mediate is the forging of iron into bioactive molecules. Although the biochemical steps and enzymes necessary for iron-sulfur clusters and heme biosynthesis are well characterized, how iron gets to the mitochondria and how this delivery is modulated remains a big gap in the knowledge of mitochondrial iron metabolism. Integrating screening data and monitoring the iron status of the mitochondria and the cell I plan to shed new light on the ancient and essential mechanism of iron delivery into the mitochondria. <image:caption>Jack studied Biomedical Genetics for his undergraduate degree at Newcastle University. His PhD project then involved researching rare neurological diseases at the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research at Newcastle University, primarily focussing on characterising a novel neurodevelopmental disorder caused by impaired autophagy. During this time, Jack was awarded an EMBO Short-term Fellowship at the University of Helsinki where he used induced pluripotent stem cells and differentiated neural culture to further uncover how defective autophagy impairs neural integrity. Now an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellow, Jack’s training continues in the McBride Lab where he moves to uncover how Parkinson’s disease-related proteins regulate innate and adaptive immunity in response to inflammation. <image:title>Olesia - Post-Doctoral Fellow</image:title>
<image:caption>Mesmerized by all things biology, Olesia received her original training in genetics and cell biology, using drosophila as a model organism. She then completed her PhD studies in the Suomalainen lab at the University of Helsinki, Finland, supported by scholarships from the Doctoral Program in Biomedicine, Maud Kuistila, Otto Malm, and Epilepsialiitto foundations. During her Ph.D. studies, Olesia focused on cell-specific consequences of mitochondrial dysfunction in the brain. Most notably her research established astrocytes as a driver of pathology upon mitochondrial dysfunction in the brain. In our lab, Olesia uses a combination of cultured cell and mouse models to investigate the role of the mitochondrial SUMO ligase in host defense responses. Olesia’s position is currently supported by the Sigrid Juselius foundation and Redpoll Fellowships. Camila has a master’s degree in Biochemistry and a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, both at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil. During both undergraduate and graduate research, Camila has studied mechanisms related to neuroimmune signaling involved in Parkinson’s disease. Currently, she is working on the roles of LRRK2 and Vps35 mutations in immune signaling pathways. During her PhD studies she will be looking at multiple functional outputs within primary neurons, microglia and astrocytes in conditions of inflammation to understand cell biology processes, signaling pathways and effects on neuronal function and survival.
